Detail. Methodist Episcopal General Conference, held at Napanee, August, 1874. Rev. Michael Benson was elected Secretary for the Conference. Rev. Michael Benson was born in Ontario in either 1831 or 1833 (his age on the census varies), son of James and Mary Benson of Whitby. In 1871, he was living in Bothwell (Chatham-Kent) where a new Methodist Episcopal church had been established in 1869. However, he did not stay long. He and his wife, Sybil Hamilton (who came from Maine), had a daughter, Alida, born August 1873 in Strathroy, Middlesex county. By 1880, the family had moved again, this time to the United States. Rev. Michiel [sic] Benson, born Canada, Methodist Episcopal Minister and wife, Sybil, may be found in Madison, Wisconsin. In 1900, they are recorded in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin. They are also on the 1910 U.S. census. The 1900 census says that the couple moved to the United States in 1876. The date of death of Rev. Michael Benson has not been found. The photograph is badly damaged in the area of this portrait.
