Detail. Napanee, Grace Methodist, Mrs. Symington's Bible Class, 1909. Copy 2.
John Lewis Madill was born in about 1858 near Peterborough, Ontario. It appears that his father died relatively young, leaving his brother, David, a blacksmith to provide for himself, his mother and five brothers. All of the boys took up a trade and did well. John entered a dry goods store as a clerk but was able to work his way up to running his own store in Lakefield, Peterborough county. John and his wife, Wilhemina, moved to Napanee from Lakefield between 1901 and 1911. In about 1919, they moved to Toronto where Madill supplemented his investment income by selling insurance. He died in Toronto on December 29, 1927 and was brought back to Napanee for burial. |
