Trustees, Teachers and Others
From a Ledger used by the County Treasurer
The Province of Ontario paid education grants to the upper-tier municipality (in our case, the County of Lennox and Addington) which in turn paid portions to the schools. There were two payments per year, one for the fall-winter semester and one for the spring semester. The following is the record of the payments from a ledger used by the County Treasurer from 1883 to 1885. He recorded to whom the cheque was paid, for which school the funds were intended, and the calendar year for which the funds applied. Sometimes, the person collecting the grant was the teacher, sometimes a school trustee, sometimes just someone trusted who was travelling in the right direction. The Treasurer occasionally noted if the cheque was given to a trustee. He seldom explained who the other people were.Sometimes, one person collected more than one cheque. This might reflect "union schools" -- instances where two (or more) sections had been combined due to light enrolment. Or it might be because the person could deliver two cheques.
In addition to the regular grant moneys, schools serving particularly poor neighbourhoods could apply for a top-up, known as the "Poor School" grants.
The following is the list of payments made in 1883-1885. The spelling has been left as written. The County ledger contains only the School Section number (the "S.S. number"). We have added more information about each school, when it is easily available.
Special thanks to Stephen Medd, Jane Scott and Carol Lessard for help with this list.
