In Upper Canada, newspaper coverage of marital affairs was restricted to those in better economic circumstances, with occasional contributions from the 'yeomanry' (respectable farmers with aspirations). Alliances among the working class only made the newspaper when there was a possible misbehaviour or titilation to whet the appetite of the reader. It is also possible that the clergy influenced who was recorded in the papers, and who was not. Clergy may have submitted marriages as proof of achievement. Remember that this is a period of considerable disquiet about which faith could legitimately marry couples, with political overtones which might puzzle us today.
Notice the huge impact on Kingston society made by the British military presence. The officers left Kingston for postings elsewhere, but Quinte/Kingston folk continued to be interested in their fate. It is also worth remarking that the majority of the readers in this period were born in the United Kingdom and had as many or more friends and relations in the British Isles then in America. As the 19th century progressed, this would change.
The Society would like to acknowledge the work of Lesley Gavlas in arranging much of this material.

Dancing. On Monday last there was a splendid Ball and Supper at the Royal Hotel, in honour of His Majesty's Coronation. The Ballroom was neatly decorated with evergreens and transparencies and exhibited a gay spectacle of all the beauty and fashion which the combined forces of the Military, Navy and Citizens could muster. The company sat down to supper at twelve o'clock; and after toasting His Majesty with due affection, returned to the ballroom, where they continued to enjoy by turns the sober country dance and sprightly quadrille till near four o'clock next morning. Kingston Chronicle, Dec. 14, 1821, p. 3. [The transparencies were glass slides which were projected on the walls by means of primitive projectors. The same was done outside the next day, on the walls of buildings, as part of a "general illumination" which included placing candles in every window. The lower orders celebrated the coronation with a bonfire and the roasting of an ox.] "The next Kingston Assembly will take place at the Royal Hotel on Friday Evening the 21st inst., dancing to commence at 8:00 o'clock..." Military Displays - Tuesday last, being Saint George's Day, and also the period appointed for
celebrating the birth of our gracious Monarch... the garrison appeared under arms and fired feu-de-joie
from the Forts on Points Henry and Mississagua... At one o'clock, a gun boat stationed in front
of the Commissioner's House and gaily decorated with flags, fired a second royal salute. The
first and second regiments of Frontenac Militia, which are but newly organised, were mustered and
paraded at the same time and we felt much gratified by their appearance. We cannot avoid particularizing
the Artillery Company of the 1st Regiment and the troop of Light Dragoons attached to the second.
Both these companies were clad in uniforms, and the latter was mounted in a very respectable style.
Captain Raynes, who commands the Dragoons... merits great praise... and the men have shewn very
creditable zeal... in so speedily providing themselves with horses and neat uniforms...

Woodard, Catharine. This is to inform the public that, about nine years ago, I was married to
William Woodard; and that about two years ago, he turned me off without any provocation and
now lives with my sister's daughter, the wife of Jerry Manters. - - Here is the difference between
a poor man, and one possessing plenty of Cash; after trading upon my money and making a
fortune he is ashamed of me, and he turns me off. Catharine Woodard, Kingston, Nov. 30, 1819.
Kingston Chronicle, Dec. 10, 1819, p. 3
Woodard, William. "Whereas Catherine Woodard, my wife, has inserted in the Kingston
Chronicle a malicious and false statement respecting me...." Catherine had accused William of
marrying her for her money, and of getting rid of her to live with a woman not his wife, one Mrs.
Manter. William states that he improved upon the property left to his wife, Catharine, on the
death of her first husband. After he invited his only daughter by his first marriage to come from
the States and live with them, Catherine's conduct "became so inconsistent" that they agreed to a
separation, with an equal division of the property before witnesses. About two months ago [i.e..
Oct., 1819] a woman whose husband, Jeremiah Manter, had run off and left her with two
children, applied to Woodard's daughter for shelter in return for housework. This agreement was
for the winter, or until Jeremiah Manter returned. Kingston Chronicle, Dec. 23, 1819
