CUSTOMERS AT A NAPANEE STORE, 1833-1834

THIS IS A LIST of the customers at the Benson Store at the falls of the Napanee, 1833 - 1834. The shop was one of four at the falls, and was a typical Upper Canadian store selling a wide range of goods from tea, spices and whiskey to crockery and footware. At this time, Napanee was a hamlet, consisting of less than a dozen structures grouped about two mills. Most customers were sons of United Empire Loyalists with a scattering of later immigrants.
Why is our name spelled incorrectly?Spelling of names in the 19th century was casual. For this transcription, less acceptable spellings (in 21st century terms, "wrong") are shown in square brackets. When it was impossible to say whether entries belonged to one person or two, they have been left separate, and it is up to the researcher to determine whether the entries belong to one person or not.
Just a name, and nothing more?When nothing follows the name, the person visited the store only once.
What do all those brackets mean?Round brackets ( ) are copied directly from the source. Square brackets [ ] indicate information added by Museum staff.
Where are the women? The hamlet may well have been a primarily male settlement in 1833 with many single men passing
through or working at the mills. However, Benson's list must not be used as evidence for this.
Remember that women may have visited the store more than is reflected in the index, since accounts
of married women were usually kept in the name of her husband.
